There are two ways to use Canvas with Clever:
- Districts can set up Clever Instant Login with Canvas as an Identity Provider, meaning users will sign into Clever with their Canvas credentials.
- Districts add Canvas as an Instant Login Link in the Clever portal.
Setting up Canvas as an identity provider (IDP)
To use Instant Login with Canvas, send your Canvas Instance URL in a request to Clever Support. We will set up a connection on our back-end to match Canvas fields against Clever fields to authenticate a user through. Here are the default matches:
Canvas field - [Clever fields]
email -> [email]
login_id -> [email, credentials.district_username]
sis_user_id -> [sis_id]
unique_id -> [email, credentials.district_username, sis_id, student_number]
If these default matches do not work for your district, please let us know in your support request.
Setting up Canvas as an Instant Login Link
In order to enable Canvas as an Instant Login link, please complete the following steps.
1. Set up Canvas to accept Clever Logins
In Canvas, navigate to Admin > Authentication, then click "Choose an Authentication Provider", and add Clever. There, you can enter your Clever District ID, choose a Login Attribute, and click Save.
To find out what your Clever District ID is, please reach out to Clever Support.
2. Test a login into Canvas
Confirm that users are able to log in to your district's instance URL. Please navigate to https://<your domain>.instructure.com/login/clever and confirm that a student and teacher can log in to Canvas using Clever.
Once these two steps are completed, reach out to Clever Support, and we will be able to enable the Canvas icon on your Clever portal.
